Synthetic blood

In the United States alone, approximately 45,000 units of blood are needed in hospitals every day. According to the WHO, 75 out of 124 surveyed countries do not collect enough donor blood to remain self-sufficient for their demand.

To remedy this deficiency, researchers in Scotland have been approved to develop synthetic blood from stem cells. This would help alleviate the high demand while preventing the possibility for infection from bloodborne pathogens.
