Lake Hillier

This is Western Australia’s Lake Hillier and although there are several theories on the origins of its flamboyant pink colouration, the most accepted one states that it’s caused by a combination of low nutrient concentrations and the bacteria Dunaliella salina and Halobacterium. The shallow briny lake is 600 metres across and was first described by British navigator Matther Flinders in 1802.
